Classification

KlassifikationAll Danhostel hostels are officially classified with a star rating of up to five stars. Classification is made on the basis of 32 different criteria, mainly involving the buildings, rooms, communal areas, interior design and basic service facilities, i.e. things that can be measured and assessed “objectively”.

This does mean, however, that “subjective” things such as atmosphere, idyllic location and other amenity values are not taken into account in the star rating. So it can be just as nice and cosy at a 1-star hostel as at a 5-star hostel and, no matter which hostel you choose, you will have a good stay.

All our hostels have family rooms, several with their own shower and toilet. Almost all hostels are furnished with good quality standard beds, so you are assured a good night’s sleep, wherever you are staying.

It would be far too exhaustive to list the details of all 32 classification criteria, so the following is a brief introduction to the five different star ratings.

1 star is awarded to hostels that fulfil the minimum requirements within certain areas such as visitor information, reception, bathroom facilities, sleeping accommodation, lounge, guest kitchen, catering, cleaning, staff training, etc.

2 star hostels offer luggage storage facilities and the safekeeping of valuables in addition to the minimum requirements. There is a kiosk in reception. The rooms are furnished with a table, chairs and mirror. There are good communal facilities. Coffee/tea can be made in the guest kitchen.

3 star hostels have better information facilities in reception. There are often a small number of rooms with their own shower and toilet. But the majority of rooms have shared shower and toilet facilities, equipped with shelves, hooks and mirrors. The guest kitchen has an oven or microwave. There is a separate TV lounge. Bikes can be parked in a covered bike shed. There are clothes drying facilities. In addition to breakfast, it is possible to order packed lunches and/or dinner. Naturally, 3 star hostels also meet the requirements of 1 and 2 star hostels.

4 stars are awarded to hostels where at least 75% of the rooms have their own shower and toilet. In some cases, two rooms may, however, share a shower and toilet. Washing machine and tumble drier facilities are provided. There will be good parking facilities for cars and bikes. To be awarded 4 stars, the hostel must additionally meet all the requirements of 3 star hostels.

5 stars are awarded to hostels where all rooms have their own shower and toilet. In addition to the facilities mentioned above, there is also a room equipped as a playroom and designed for family activities, and there is a playground in the grounds of the hostel. The guest kitchen will be equipped with an oven and a microwave. Cycle tools and a puncture repair kit are available. Hot and cold drinks can be purchased round the clock. Payment can be made using a minimum of two different international payment cards.
